Lower every Standard guitar string by one semitone to E♭2, A♭2, D♭3, G♭3, B♭3 and E♭4 for a slightly softer feel and darker register.
Standard shapes, one semitone lower
Half-step down preserves all the interval relationships of Standard tuning. Chord and scale shapes feel the same, but the sounding pitch is one semitone lower and the strings carry slightly less tension.
Because every string moves by the same amount, tune from the lowest E♭2 upward and then make a second pass. Changing all six tensions can cause the earliest strings to settle a little.
How to tune accurately
- 1Select E♭2 and lower the sixth string slowly from E2.
- 2Continue through A♭2, D♭3, G♭3, B♭3 and E♭4.
- 3Confirm each target in the green zone for one second.
- 4Repeat the full low-to-high pass once the neck and strings have settled.
