Know the target

The quickest route from Standard to Drop D

Drop D adds a low D octave beneath the open fourth string and makes a one-finger power-chord shape available across the bottom three strings. The upper five strings retain familiar Standard tuning intervals.

Select the low D target to lock Auto mode before loosening the sixth string. This prevents the fading E pitch or nearby harmonics from pulling the target to another string.

How to tune accurately

1Start from Standard tuning and select the sixth-string D2 target.
2Pluck the low E string and loosen it slowly until the detected note becomes D2.
3Center D2 inside the green zone, then verify A2, D3, G3, B3 and E4.
4Recheck D2 after playing a few firm chords because a newly lowered string can settle.
