Know the target
A full guitar step lower than E Standard
D Standard moves every string down two semitones, so the intervals under your fingers stay identical to E Standard while the guitar sounds a whole tone lower. It is different from Drop D, which lowers only the sixth string and leaves the other five at Standard pitch.
The lower register reduces tension with the same strings, but it can become loose on a light-gauge set. Tune low to high, make small peg movements near center and perform a second pass after the neck has settled.

How to tune accurately
- 1Select D2 and lower the sixth string from E2 by one whole step.
- 2Continue through G2, C3 and F3 while muting the strings you are not tuning.
- 3Finish with A3 and D4, holding each target in the green zone for one second.
- 4Repeat the low-to-high pass once all six strings have settled under their new tension.
