Open E, and why its string tension matters

Open E uses repeated E and B notes around G♯, the major third, so a straight barre can form major chords across the neck. It is often chosen for slide and blues, but several strings must be raised from E Standard and that adds tension.

Tune up slowly, one string at a time, and stop if the string gauge or instrument setup is not suitable. Open D with a capo at the second fret can provide a related sound while avoiding the higher tension of this exact Open E setup.

Four clear steps

How to tune accurately

  1. 1Confirm the low E2 string stays at Standard pitch.
  2. 2Raise A2 slowly to B2, then raise D3 to E3 in small steps.
  3. 3Raise G3 carefully to G♯3 and verify the unchanged B3 and E4 strings.
  4. 4Recheck every string after the added tension has settled across the neck.
Reference: A4 = 440 Hz
