Open A keeps the low and high E strings at their Standard pitches, while A2 remains unchanged. The middle D, G and B strings move downward to C♯3, E3 and A3, producing an A-major chord when played open.

The three lowered middle strings reduce tension from E Standard, but the guitar should still be tuned gradually and checked again after the neck settles. Selecting the exact string target keeps repeated E and A notes from being confused with a neighboring string.
