Why standard ukulele tuning is re-entrant
Standard High-G ukulele tuning is G4 C4 E4 A4 in physical string order, from string 4 to string 1. G4 is higher than C4, so the sequence does not rise evenly in pitch. This is called re-entrant tuning.
Low G changes the fourth string to G3 with a suitable Low-G string; Baritone uses D3 G3 B3 E4. D tuning and the Open C and Open D presets offer other note sequences. Match the preset to the instrument and installed strings rather than trying to force every ukulele to High G.

How to tune accurately
- 1Hold the ukulele close enough for the microphone to hear a clean open string.
- 2Tune the top string to G4, then continue to C4, E4 and A4.
- 3Mute the other strings and make small peg movements as the marker approaches center.
- 4Keep each reading in the green zone for one second before moving on.

Changing the tuner calibration recalculates every target from A4 = 415–450 Hz. The values above use the common 440 Hz reference.

Should the G string be G3 or G4?
Standard High G uses G4. A ukulele fitted for Low G uses G3 instead. Check the string set and select the matching preset before tuning.
What order are ukulele strings shown?
String 4 to string 1: G C E A for High G and Low G, or D G B E for standard Baritone. The octave numbers tell High G and Low G apart.
