Why standard ukulele tuning is re-entrant

In common high-G tuning, the top G4 string is higher than the following C4 string. That re-entrant order gives the ukulele its compact, bright chord voicing and must not be mistaken for a lower G3.

The tuner follows the artwork's physical string routing and matching peg. Click a string or peg to lock Auto mode when nearby strings resonate at similar frequencies.

Four clear steps

How to tune accurately

  1. 1Hold the ukulele close enough for the microphone to hear a clean open string.
  2. 2Tune the top string to G4, then continue to C4, E4 and A4.
  3. 3Mute the other strings and make small peg movements as the marker approaches center.
  4. 4Keep each reading in the green zone for one second before moving on.
Reference: A4 = 440 Hz

Notes and frequencies

Physical stringTargetFrequency
String 4 G4 392.00 Hz
String 3 C4 261.63 Hz
String 2 E4 329.63 Hz
String 1 A4 440.00 Hz

Changing the tuner calibration recalculates every target from A4 = 415–450 Hz. The values above use the common 440 Hz reference.
