Standard four-string bass tuning
Standard bass tuning uses the same note names as the lowest four guitar strings but one octave lower: E1, A1, D2 and G2. Low notes need a clean attack and careful muting because their harmonics can be stronger than the fundamental.
Pitch leveling happens locally before detection to extend a useful sustain without replaying the microphone signal. Raw level information remains available for distinguishing a new pluck from a fading tail.
How to tune accurately
- 1Select the low E1 string and pluck it cleanly while muting A, D and G.
- 2Let the note sustain; avoid repeated hard attacks while the marker is settling.
- 3Tune upward through A1, D2 and G2, holding each within ±5 cents for one second.
- 4Recheck E1 after all four strings are finished.
