Drop A on seven strings changes one string

Start with a seven-string guitar in B Standard: B1 E2 A2 D3 G3 B3 E4. Lower B1 by two semitones to A1, leaving the other six strings in place. The lowest three strings then form A1 E2 A2, a root, fifth and octave that can be fretted at the same fret for a movable power-chord shape.

Dropping the seventh string reduces its tension. The appropriate low-string gauge depends on scale length, string construction and how hard you pick; there is no single gauge that fits every seven-string guitar. The live preset carries a heavy-low-string recommendation. If the string feels unstable or buzzes excessively, check the setup rather than compensating with repeated hard plucks.

How to tune accurately

1Open the seven-string Drop A preset, allow the microphone, and tap the seventh-string A1 target.
2Mute the upper six strings and lower B1 gradually to A1. Let a moderate pluck sustain before judging the reading.
3Check E2, A2, D3, G3, B3 and E4 in order, holding each centered reading for one second.
4Return to A1 after the full pass. Check the fretted low-string notes too if you have changed the gauge or made Drop A your permanent setup.

Changing the tuner calibration recalculates every target from A4 = 415–450 Hz. The values above use the common 440 Hz reference.

Seven-string and six-string Drop A are different presets

Choose the seven-string route when your instrument has seven physical strings. Selecting six-string Drop A would change the upper-string targets as well.

If the low A jumps up an octave

A low string contains higher harmonics as well as its fundamental. Keep A1 selected, mute the other strings, and try a clean pluck without distortion or background music. A brief A2 reading does not mean that the physical string should be tightened an octave.

Frequently asked questions

Do I lower all seven strings for Drop A?

No. From seven-string B Standard, lower only B1 to A1. Lowering every string a whole step would produce a different A Standard tuning.

Why are there two A targets?

A1 is the seventh string and A2 is the fifth string, one octave higher. They must remain separately selectable even though they share a note letter.
