Know the target

Standard violin tuning in fifths

Standard violin tuning rises in perfect fifths from G3 through D4 and A4 to E5. Use a steady bow stroke or clear pluck and mute neighboring open strings if they make the reading ambiguous.

Cross A and Cross G change the open-string intervals to create drones. Select the correct preset before moving a peg. Use small fine-tuner adjustments near the target where your instrument has them, and recheck all four strings after a larger change.
