Cello tuner for standard CGDA and classical scordatura
Tune the cello's four strings to standard C2 G2 D3 A3, or select dedicated presets for Bach's Fifth Suite and Kodály's Solo Sonata.
Standard cello tuning in fifths
Standard cello tuning rises in fifths from C2 to G2, D3 and A3. Low C needs a clear attack and enough sustain for the detector to follow its fundamental rather than a stronger harmonic.
The Bach V preset lowers A3 to G3; the Kodály setup lowers C2 to B1 and G2 to F♯2 while leaving D3 and A3 unchanged.
How to tune accurately
- 1Pluck or bow C2 cleanly while damping the other strings.
- 2Tune upward through G2 and D3.
- 3Finish with A3 using small peg or fine-tuner movements.
- 4Make a second pass after all four tensions settle.
Notes and frequencies
| Physical string | Target | Frequency |

| String 3 | G2 | 98.00 Hz |
| String 2 | D3 | 146.83 Hz |
| String 1 | A3 | 220.00 Hz |
Changing the tuner calibration recalculates every target from A4 = 415–450 Hz. The values above use the common 440 Hz reference.
