Know the target

A complete change map from Standard to FACGCE

From Standard E2 A2 D3 G3 B3 E4, raise the sixth string E2 to F2, lower the fourth string D3 to C3, and raise the second string B3 to C4. A2, G3 and E4 stay where they are. The two C strings are an octave apart and need separate checks.

The open notes contain F, A and C, plus E and G: the root, major third, fifth, major seventh and ninth of F. This explains the Fmaj9 sound of the open strings. Standard chord fingerings change because three strings move; begin with small shapes and let the untouched open strings ring while you listen to the result.

How to tune accurately

1Check that your instrument and strings can accommodate the two raised pitches, then open the FACGCE preset.
2Bring the sixth string gradually from E2 to F2, verify A2, and lower D3 to C3.
3Verify G3, raise B3 carefully to C4, and check the unchanged high E4. Select each string to hold its target during a change.
4Play all six strings separately, then sound the open voicing. Recheck F2 and both C strings after the tension settles.

A tuning preset does not determine a safe string gauge

F2 and C4 require more tension than the original E2 and B3 on the same strings. Make small changes and check the instrument and string maker’s advice if you use heavy strings, a long scale or an unfamiliar setup. There is no gauge recommendation here that applies to every guitar.

Frequently asked questions

Is FACGCE the same as Open F?

No. FACGCE is F2 A2 C3 G3 C4 E4. The separate Open F preset in this tuner is C2 F2 C3 F3 A3 F4. Check the complete sequence rather than selecting a preset by its F chord name alone.

Does FACGCE tune every string down?

No. The sixth and second strings rise by one semitone, the fourth falls by two semitones, and the other three remain Standard.
